Join us for a Mother's Day artful treat as we take a close look at American women artists working from the mid 1800s to the Great Depression. Together, their work shows us what life was daily like for middle-class, urban women. You might be surprised!

While the American experiment has allowed for many forms of societal rule-breaking, historically, women artists often found themselves bound by old-world conventions. These artists often faced difficult choices—making sacrifices in their personal lives or in their careers. Who says women can’t have it all? This image-rich talk lays out the arguments.

Despite evident talent and success, most of these artists have fallen into obscurity with their death. Come discover and closely examine works by women artists who collectively paint a picture of a changing America. We will learn about:

  • what 19th-century society said about appropriate behavior for middle-class women

  • the American Art Union and its role in shaping artist careers and the art market

  • clever strategies women artists use to balance their home life with their profession

  • how a publishing boom created new art careers

  • new urban technologies liberated women out in the world, and in their sex lives

  • the New Woman and how she rocked traditional gender roles

  • And so much more…

Come discover the eye-opening backstories to works you may have seen on museum walls like at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and help bring all these artists back to life.

FYI—If you buy a ticket for the live event, the Zoom invite will be in your confirmation email (scroll to the bottom of the email, it's there!). If you do not receive the confirmation email, check your spam folder first, but please message us IMMEDIATELY if you don't find it and we shall send it to you directly, DO NOT WAIT until the event starts!
