We are doing a lot of tours about the racy sides of Paris history. Well how about one about the racy side of London history? Americans think of the British as very proper, but friends, that’s just an act. London is the city of “Harlots,” and British history is super-steamy, especially before the Victorian age buttoned things up. So come explore the wonderful National Portrait Gallery in London with Professor Lear, and learn about an Elizabethan aristocrat who went to the Tower for poisoning her ex (who decided to prove in court that he could, ahem, perform, so long as she was not present), a queen and her lesbian relationships, a cross-dressing 18th century diplomat, a king and his 3 mistresses—including one portrayed as the Virgin Mary, with their illegitimate son as the baby Jesus! And that’s just a start, for a tour that will conclude with the wild Bloomsbury set, who, as the saying goes, “lived on Squares, but loved in triangles.” In fact, for concentration of scandalous fun, there is no museum better than the NPG, so come enjoy finding out about the sexy side of British history as Professor Lear guides you through its collection.
