Broken eggs symbolizing lost virginity … a lute standing in for a man’s desires ... a lady’s slack shoulder strap suggesting adultery: Great art is full of hidden meanings, and more often than not, they involve sex. Discover the wiles that artists have employed to outwit censors. Professor Andrew Lear (world expert on gay art and four-time winner of the Harvard Certificate for Excellence in Teaching) leads this new eye-opening tour, "Scandals and Secrets in Plain Sight at the Met."

Of course, polite society rarely allowed sex to be presented explicitly. But throughout the centuries, artists have used sly suggestions and concealed codes to sneak around society’s rules, leaving future generations magnificent works whose double meanings are waiting to be discovered.

Join TheMenEvent on a private tour of the Metropolitan Museum that shows how artists fought the censors—and won. You will discover:

  • The sex taboos of ancient Greece (so different from our own!)

  • How the Renaissance brought desire back into plain sight

  • The Bible as a source for moral instruction -- and erotic imagery

  • Paintings that warned against vice — by depicting vice!

  • Artists who risked their careers by depicting scandalous themes

See things you might never have imagined existed in art. From crazed women worshiping the god Bacchus to Parisian prostitutes on their work break, the Metropolitan is a treasure house of works that tell us so much about sex, desire and what it means to be human.

Professor Andrew Lear has taught art history and Classics at Harvard, Columbia and NYU and the winner of the Travel Industry’s 2016 Travvy Award for best escorted tour operator, LGBT; and of the Luxury Travel Guide’s 2016 award, LGBT Tour Operator of the Year.

Limited to 20 persons, today's tour departs promptly at 6:15 p.m. and lasts approximately two hours. “Scandals and Secrets" is not an official Met offering.

Where: Meet and depart at 6pm, inside to the right of the main entrance (next to the statue of the Pharaoh)

*NOTE: "Full Price" and "Senior" price include cost of admission to the museum as well as the tour. The $35 cost for Met members and students is for the tour only (please bring your member ID or student ID to gain entry to the museum). The tour is operated by Oscar Wilde Tours and is not officially an offering of the Met Museum. Price of admission does not include beverages. No refunds or exchanges
