Join us for a tour of the Gay Secrets of the Metropolitan Museum! We will explore some of the Met’s queer treasures, from ancient Greek nudes (and erotic vase-painting, on which Professor Lear is a world expert!) to homoerotic works from the Renaissance, and a panoply of modern works, some by LGBT artists, some portraying LGBT people, and some expressing same-sex desire. Famous artists and personalities, such as Caravaggio or Gertrude Stein, will appear-but so will lesser-known artists and works whose homoerotic charge is often ignored (including images used in homosexual initiation rites in New Guinea!). We all know about the Stonewall riots in 1969. But who knows that Mae West was arrested in Manhattan for producing a pro-gay-rights play in 1926? Or that Walt Whitman read his homoerotic poems to friends at a bar on Broadway? Professor Andrew Lear has designed this tour to bring New York's gay *history* out of the closet. CLICK HERE to register.
On this tour, we venture into the heart of Greenwich Village, where the Stonewall riots took place and the first Gay Pride parade started a year later. But the Village's gay history goes back a century before that, to Walt Whitman's time. Like Paris' Left Bank, the Village has been the center of all of the city's many countercultures and artistic movements, from the Bohemians of the World War I period to the Beats, the Abstract Expressionists, the New York School, Pop Art, the creators of Off (and Off-Off) Broadway, and of course the gay liberation movement.
Are you a young gay man who always has the hots for the silver fox? Are you 35 and under and yearn to date a handsome mature man? Is it the suit that turns you on? Maybe the nights on the town away from the other club kids and instead painting the town red with an older established MAN? We have the event just for you. At our “Young for Mature” gay speed dating, younger gays (35 and under) will go on dates with handsome mature men (38 and up). If you connect with men outside your agerange, this is the event for YOU! Registration cost: $30-$42 (includes wine or gelatto) REGISTER HERE
