LONDON

I just got back from a lovely trip to London where I saw 5 shows in the West End (4 will probably be making their way to Broadway next season).  Here is my run down

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE - This production was SOOOO fine, and I loved the set (a huge white room that you might find in a museum).  All of the color, composition, tension, balance and harmony were achieved with projections.  The effect was stunning. That, in combination with some very fine performances, made for an eventful evening.  If you are in London soon, you should check it out.

HAY FEVER with JUDI DENCH - A fine production of this seldom performed Noel Coward comedy.  Dame J D pulls it off splendidly.

EVITA - This brand new revival (only opened the week prior) is very very grand.  The sets are on par with a very large opera, and make for a very interesting effect once Eva moves to the city.  The actress playing Eva is actually Argentinian, and it was very interesting hearing her perform with her natural accent.  She is only about 5' tall, and Peron is well over 6', so you really feel as if this woman is somewhat Napoleonic in her drive to take over the country.  Che is very pretty too (provides the eye candy that Mandy Patinkin never could hope to achieve.  :)

DONKEY'S YEARS - This Michael Frayn (Noises Off) comedy is enjoying a splendid revival.  As you would expect, this is a very well written farce with lots of door slamming, mistaken identity and wacky British characters.  Not to miss!

I wish I could have told you about ROCK N ROLL, the new Tom Stoppard play, but unfortunately, the show was sold out. I got there about 2 hours before curtain to wait for a return, but there were already close to 20 people ahead of me.  With an average of 5 tickets returned per night, I left.  If you are planning a trip to London you should book early for this one.  It is a hit!

Instead, I moseyed over to the Victoria Palace and got a return for BILLY ELLIOT (My 3rd time seeing this show).  This show continues to be a HUGE hit, and should do very very well when it comes to Broadway.  I saw a young Asian boy play Billy, and he was magnificient.

Lucky ME!  My visit just to happened to coincide with EURO-PRIDE - this year taking place in London.  And lucky you, I attended all of the events with camera in hand, and you reap the benefits!  Click here to enjoy the photos!

TIS THE SEASON - redux

I am a popular boy!  God knows I can't turn down an invitation to an opening night!  many many new events in the last week.  Here is my take:

LT OF INISHMORE - Went to the opening night party on 5/3.  Lots of celebs!  Did you know that Mathew Modine is TALL?  He has to be 6 3 at least.  And - he is one of those handsome men that just ages so well.  He has got to have the largest head I have seen on a man in a very long time (I don't mean cocky, just BIG).  The show is really really funny and quite the hit.  Check out the website.

HOT FEET - My favorite part of this new musical (featuring the sounds of Earth Wind and Fire) was when 6 shirtless muscle bound black men strut themselves onstage and do the Serpentine Fire.  Hubba Hubba. Check out the website.

TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL - I was invited to the WORLD PREMIERE of Charles Busch's new film A VERY SERIOUS PERSON.  As you know, Charles was one of TheMenEvent's celebrity guests last year.  Now I love myself some CB!  I first saw him perform in Pyscho Beach Party in 1998 (?) off broadway at the Players Theatre (I loved the theatre then, but due to recent renovations and the theatre owner fitting in 4 more rows than he should have, my tall legs can't fit in its current configuration - grrrrrrrr).  Well, this may come as a shock to some of you, but Charles plays a MAN in his new film (co-wrote and starred in). TONS of Broadway legends in the cast (Polly Bergen, Dana Ivey, Julie Halston), and the movie is quite moving.  What a treat!.  SEE IT.

TIS THE SEASON

April is just about the busiest theatre going month of the year. For a show-queen like me I am in heaven (ok sometimes hell when you are stuck in a bad show with no way out and no intermission in site).  But so far - this month has been heavenly.  Here is my take:

  • LT OF INISHMORE - Saw the show in it's final weekend at the Atlantic before it moves to Broadway.  Without giving too much away, it is a bloody good time.  Very very funny.  If you like the rouch and tumbly sort of irish stud, you will love this play. Hubba Hubba.
  • HOT FEET - Went down to DC to see an out of town tryout of this new musical that "Dances to the music of Earth Wind and Fire."  It is an interesting way to incorporate all of those tunes that I danced to in my 8th grade school dances.  Two words - SERPENTINE FIRE - one of the sexiest dances I have ever seen involving 6 shirtless muscled-up male dancers.  Hubba Hubba.
  • ENTERTAINING MR. SLOAN - Brilliant.  Absolutely BRILLIANT!  Chris Carmack gets my vote for best performance by a former Calvin Klein model.  He is very very good, and suprisingly better than I ever anticipate from someone so good looking.  Alec Baldwin gives a hysterical performance.  So funny.  This is a MUST SEE!
  •  HISTORY BOYS - I was supposed to see the first preview, but I hurt my back and had to have a date with my vibrating massage wand.  It was a good date, but I am sad to have missed the play.  Anyone else see it yet?  Write me and tell me what you thought.

BIG LIPS

Just found the Ford Model website - I have never seen so many beautiful men with huge lips.

Back from Asbury Park

Spent the weekend in the lovely town of Asbury Park, NJ.  They had what is known as Gay Bowling weekend - a monthly affair which gathers all of the boys at the local bowling alley.  It was a hoot.  I guess you can say that we have the gay bowling leagues up here, but this was more like a night at Splash with balls and pins.  Fun Times.

Can you believe that the year is almost 1/6 gone?

HRC GALA REPORT

I had a great time on Saturday at the HRC Gala. Thom and Kyan from Queer Eye sat at my table, which was right next to the stars from Law and Order SVU and the Boy Meets Boy reality stars. Good times!

Oh, and for those who were waiting for baited breath to learn about the super secretive auction items I hinted at in last week's email, they were the two jackets from Brokeback Mountain - the actual ones from the movie as seen in the poster. They went to some lucky cowboy crazed bidder for a whopping $43,000! Yippee!

By the way, a children's charity is now auctioning off 2 of the shirts used in the movie on Ebay. Bidding is now at $29,000. Check it out .

"You take the good, you take the bad." These girls take it all.

-THE FACTS OF LIFE: The Lost Episode - a new comedy by Jamie Morris (LA Weekly Theatre Award-winning "Mommie Queerest").  I saw this show - they performed on my Atlantis cruise, and it is pretty darn funny.  The boy who plays Natalie is HYSTERICAL, and does a brilliant impersonation.  You should check it out, and for $15 it just makes sense. Fri, Mar. 3rd at 8p, Ars Nova (511 W 54th St) Buy tickets.

RAVE for I LOVE YOU BECAUSE

Ok Guys - did you read the NY Times yesterday? If you did, you would have read the incredible RAVE review for I LOVE YOU BECAUSE , the new musical that just opened at the Village Theatre.

The show is a modern-day telling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and stars a great 6 person cast including some hotties (see pic left) and Stephanie D'ambruzio from Avenue Q.

The Times called it "An infectiously entertaining show!" and "The comic timing is perfect!" and "It's terrific, refreshing fun!" Read the whole review here .

Plus, The Associate Press said:
"The promising debut of a new song-writing duo! Ryan Cunningham's lyrics are unassuming and refreshingly direct, and Joshua Salzman's music perks along nicely with help of an appealing cast and the inventive direction of Daniel Kutner."

Take my word, you need to buy your tix before there are no more tickets left for a long time.

Back from Virginia

I spent a nice week in with my mom and bro and bro in law (yea all of the boys in the Hysell house are gay gay gay).  They are all in Charlottesville va (yee haw), but i must say that for xmas I wanted to get my mom a wireless connection, or at least dsl.  She only has dial up (thru aol) and it was like pulling teeth to even check my work email.  I tried to search out a wireless in her neighborhood, but she lives in a retirement community and NO ONE has wireless.  Oy.  Forget peace on earth - I want everyone to have dsl and wireless.  Wouldnt that make the world a better place.  I think so.  :)

My favorite gift?  I got the SodaClub.  I love it.

I saw it at one of mom's friend's houses (You know the type - watches QVC all day long?), and I must say it is the coolest kitchen gadget.  I can make any soda I want and there are a TON of flavors.  Don't bother with that trendy chocolate fountain.  This year - i predict that the Soda Club will be the it gift.

New Year's Eve Party Update

Thanks to everyone who has purchased their tickets to the Times Square Alliance VIP Party!  I am told that they have a special area sectioned off for us - on the south end of the big room, closer to the restrooms.  By now you should have received an email from Jenny Baily at the Alliance.  If not - email me and we can get you in contact with her.  Woo Hoo!  See you there!

The party takes place at Pacha NYC, 618 West 46th Street.  For details and ticket info - go to Saintatlarge.com.

'Brokeback Mountain' a Box Office Success

"Brokeback Mountain" posted the highest per-screen average over the film-flush holiday weekend. The film earned $13,599 per theater, compared with $9,305 for weekend winner "King Kong" and $8,225 for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Read the AP article.

Ricky Martin and Beach Buddy

This item is dedicated to a co worker who is is a super fan.  Now I hate sand in my speedo as much as the next person, so it is nice to see that Richy Martin and his beach going euphamism are not fans of sand as well.   Good to know that they are just like you and me.  Check out more pics of Ricky Martin and his beach bum, er yoga partner at A Socialite's Life.

Strichie!

Just got back from seeing Elaine Stritch and the New York City Gay Men's Chorus at Carnegie Hall.  What a hoot.  She forgot the words to "We need a little xmas" from Mame, but she brought the house down.  Before leaving the stage, she even made the conductor do the ending again (where she messed up) so she could get it right!  The audience just ate her up.

Confessions of a Mormon Boy Goes OFF!

Well, Off Broadway that is.  You probably have heard of CONFESSIONS OF A  MORMON BOY, the award winning play by Steven Fales.  It has been performed all over the country, won an award at the 2004 NY Fringe Festival, was just performed as part of a huge benefit at Lincoln Center.  Well, the play is going to be transfering to a Big Time Off Broadway venue - the So Ho Playhouse, with performances beginning on Jan 27.  I saw the show at the Fringe, and I really, reallyenjoyed it.  So check it out!  Learn all about a Mormon boy who goes thru excommunication, hustling, prostitution and lots of other really compelling stuff - while stying to maintain his Donny Osmond Smile.  Click here to find out more.

The Mormon Boy himself will be one of the celebrities at the Jan 17 HX Connex event.  Details.

Brokeback Mountain is Amazing

After getting shut out of showings all weekend long, I finally was able to see Brokeback Mountain tonight.  I was so affected, that at the end of the film, I could not even speak.  I just sat there, until well into the credits, before I could even speak to my friend who came with.  On the way out spoke to one of those staff people who stand at the exit (you know - the ones who say "Thank You for Coming to Loews"), I asked her if everyone cries like this after seeing this movie.  She laughed and said, pretty much.  Glad to know I am not the only cry baby out there.

Congrats to Brokeback on their 7 Golden Globe Nominations. The Cowboys are testing the Oscar Waters.

Join THEMENEVENT.COM for New Years Eve

Last year I had the lucky opportunity to go to the "Official" Times Square Alliance VIP NEW YEARS EVE Party. It had an open bar, buffet, dancing, gift bags, and best of all - a great indoor view (with bathrooms, unlike those millions outside) to see all the action. PLUS - there was a private outdoor viewing area, right in front of the building to see the ball drop. What an amazing experience! Shirley Jones was there! I partied with Mrs. Partirdge!

SO, this year, TheMenEvent.com has worked with the Alliance, and I am now able to offer access to this exclusive party for our members. PLUS - but we got you a discount at over 40% off!! I have to tell you - the price is SO worth it. Last year's event was probably the best New Years Eve I have ever had! Gobble Gobble

Happy Turkey Eve!  I love the day before Thanksgiving in the big city.  Balloon previews, people scrambling to get the fixings for din din, workers working the internet instead of actually doing work!  Such fun!  Marketing means that you work with other marketers at other companies, and no one else is working today, so we are cleaning.  Helloise would be so proud of us.

Hot Boyz

How many of you have seen Altar Boyz?  If you have not seen this amazing show - you need to go - now!  It is one of my favorite shows, and the guys are so talented and so so handsome.  Not everyone has their own website, but take a second and check out of the personal website of James Royce Edwards (center above, he plays "Luke") and Dennis Moench (far right above, he plays "Abraham").

World's Ugliest Dog Passes away

November 20, 2005

The birth of the blog!  What a big day this is for me.  I have been waiting in the wings reading other's writing.  Now I emerge so to speak.

Today I went to the Big Gay Expo at the Javits Center. I brought a first timer with me - my new friend Paul Peppers.  He is in town working with the Big Apple Circus (Living with the Carnie Folk, as he puts it).  He had such a ball going from booth to booth getting any free thing they were giving out.  I nabbed a great bag from Troy at the SIngapore AIrlines booth, plus a plush Snoopy from the Met Life booth, and lots of pens and such from every other booth.  We left before it got super duper busy (those queens must have still been in church I reckon.

A big high point was running into my favorite model from our HX Connex party - Kevin.  You will love to know that Kevin is a former AF model, a former military boy, and a full time sweetheart.  Those Eyes!!!
